Pretty in Pink - Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness
Posted by Lynda Moon-Ryan on
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime - this is a shocking statistic but its a fact. Most of us know someone who has been diagnosed and many of us have lost loved ones to this disease.
If symptoms are caught early enough treatments can be very effective and that is why Breast Cancer Awareness Month - October, is so important. Whilst we need to ensure we all do regular checks of our breasts, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is so important as it raises awareness and can save lives by educating people who previously would not have known about this disease and also to remind the rest of us how important awareness is!
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness and in memory of a dear friend, Babybox Dubai will be donating 20% of all sales in October to Pink Caravan, a charitable organisation in Dubai, UAE that is close to my heart. I lost my gorgeous friend Di Mcleland earlier this year to breast cancer after a courageous battle against the disease. Di campaigned and educated so many people since her diagnosis and was one of Pink Caravan's "Pink Ladies".
Pink Caravan is a Pan UAE breast cancer initiative that falls under Friends of Cancer Patients’ umbrella “Kashf” for early detection of cancer.
Launched in 2011 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Founder and Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FoCP), International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC, Pink Caravan has garnered widespread recognition locally, regionally, and internationally, and therefore, has appointed ambassadors from different walks of life to promote and advocate its mission.
In 2016, The Sharjah Breast Care Centre (SBCC) was inaugurated which is the result of the collaboration of Pink Caravan, University Hospital Sharjah (UHS), and Gustave Roussy Cancer Centre in Paris; one of the world’s leading cancer research institutes and the biggest health centre dedicated to oncology in Europe. The Centre offers comprehensive and multidisciplinary breast cancer treatment that includes timely diagnosis of a breast lesion, the development of a treatment pathway, breast cancer surgery, including oncoplastic (reconstructive and plastic surgery) and the administration of chemotherapy.
